I know, I know: comedies do not win Academy Awards. But have you seen Tropic Thunder? If not, you should buck up and watch it, and look deep into its story lines and characters. It really is a brilliant piece of comedy writing. So, I’d like to entreat the Academy to step outside of their usual comedy snub and consider at least a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. for his role in Tropic Thunder. Yes, I know there’s little other creditable acting in the entire movie (except for the cameo appearance by Tom Cruise, which is very nearly perfect itself, although it is still hardly creditable because there’s not enough of it). But Downey Jr. is simply sensational in this role, and I challenge you to show me a better, more complete effort in this year’s crop of movies. Yes, Ledger was captivating as the Joker, and I’d love to see him win it, but if it doesn’t go to Ledger (it will though. It’s a foregone conclusion), well, from what I’ve seen, it should definitely go to Downey Jr.
Downey Jr. (who looks oddly more creepy as the blond-haired, blue-eyed Austrailian Kirk Lazarus than he does as Lazarus’ character, Sergeant Lincoln Osiris, who happens to be a black man) has got some of the best lines of the film, and all but steals the show. If the Academy snubs Downey Jr. it would be, in my mind, as infuriating as in 1994 when Samuel L. Jackson lost the award for his role in Pulp Fiction. I’m fine with Martin Landau winning, really, he was very good in Ed Wood. But to me Sam Jackson had one of the better performances of the entire decade.
So come on Academy, give Downey Jr. a nom; he deserves it.
